| Five Students accepted to AIM Program
Five ISTA students were accepted into this summer's Coast Guard Academy AIM Program. The five juniors, Fausto Acedo, Josue Arias, Oscar Hernandez, Bayron Lopez and Nieves Yolanda Urbina will attend the program this July in New London, Connecticut. The program is designed to promote interest in engineering and technology among minoritty students. All five students are a part of the first class of "Viva Technology" students that will graduate from the ISTA academy in the spring of 2005. All five students are also involved in the 2+4+C College Early Entry Program at Cal State University Los Angeles which includes taking technology classes at the university as well as an Introduction to engineering class. All five students plan to become engineers. Next year the ISTA Academy will graduate 11 students who have declared engineering as their field of choice.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Academy have been extremely supportive of our academy students. Last year two students attended the Coast Guard Academy's Summer program. Both are going to continue their education at a university majoring in engineering. the Coast Guard has provided other opportunites for the ISTA students , including a trip to the California Speedway, where students learned about the science of NASCAR racing.
ISTA hopes to have its first Coast Guard Academy Candidate with the expressed interest of Nieves Yolanda Urbina who would like to study engineering at the Coast Guard Academy. Her goal is to one day become an astronaut. Nieves feels that the Coast Guard Academy offers the best opportunity for her to reach her goals.
